Deep snow blocking transport routes for HGVs meant some stores' deliveries went unfulfilled.
It led to shoppers in places including Wales, Scotland, Bristol and London panic buying goods as extreme weather battered Britain.
Images shared by customers on social media show near-empty shelves in supermarkets, including Tesco, Waitrose and Asda.
Libbry Brooks, who tweeted a pictured of a Sainsbury's store in Glasgow, wrote: 'Empty shelves at my local supermarket in Glasgow this lunchtime, but at least there's still tinned haggis.
Despite the photos, a Sainsbury's spokesperson told The Telegraph: 'Supply is good and essentials like bread and milk are still available - we’ve been closely monitoring the weather and adjusting stock levels accordingly.'
In one Asda in Edinburgh, staff stopped customers bulk-buying bread and milk for fear they intended to sell it on.
Posting a picture of one customer’s greedy haul online, Lindsay Barlas from Portabello wrote: ‘Staff refused to allow two guys to buy all this, plus the bread in their trolley.
