Thousands of people commemorated the fallen heroes from WWII at Eternitate Memorial Complex (Photo)
The events dedicated to Victory Day begun at 9:00 local time. Thousands of people gathered at the Eternitate Memorial Complex to lay flowers for the soldiers who lost their lives in the second world war, as well as to show their respect to the veterans who had to suffer.
Also this morning, President of the Parliament, Andrian Candu, President of Moldova, Igor Dodon and Prime Minister Pavel Filip laid flowers and commemorated fallen heroes from the Second World War. The officials later made some press declarations highlighting that it is an important day in Republic of Moldova's history, while young generation must never forget of it.
Officials thought of the people who had to live through the horrors of the Second World War, offering support to around 1 700 people. Therefore, people who participated in the war and those with disabilities received 10 000 lei, while people related to participants gained 500 lei. Spouses of fallen heroes who are no longer fit to work and have not remarried each received 1 000 lei from the state.
Zavroţchi spouses claim that they are proud of relatives who fought for peace.
"My father and three uncles were soldiers. They came back with disabilities and had a difficult life" Efim Zavroţchi said.
"We always remember them and what they have done for this country" Valentina Zavroţcaia said.
Another man said that he was born in 1941, when his father left for war. To this day he fondly remembers the stories his parent returned with.
"Among the deceased there is a monument of our family. I do not know which one it is for certain, but every year we come to lay flowers and bow" Andrei Babin said.
"My father was killed in the war, in 1941."
Fallen soldiers were also commemorated by the country's leaders, who laid flowers at both Eternitate Memorial Complex and Monument to the Victims of the Transnistrian war.
"We need to learn from the past, to ensure that there will be no more circumstances where mothers will shed tears, while people will lose their lives. Despite the fact that we live in a world filled with threats and a rather difficult regional context, I truly believe that authorities, governance managed to face it. Managed to stand tall. On one hand to protect the country, to ensure peace for citizens of Republic of Moldova that serve their country, as well as measures to reintegrate the country" President of Moldovan Parliament, Andrian Candu said.
In his turn, Prime Minister Pavel Filip that people must learn from the past.
"On this day we celebrate the defeat of Fascism and it is goo to remember all those who lost their lives on the battlefield. We must learn from the past, as it has much to teach both political leaders and citizens. It is a special day, because 5 years after May 9, 1945, European Union was created. A union that proved that it can offer its citizens a quality life. It is the future of Republic of Moldova" Prime Minister Pavel Filip declared.
Around 270 000 Moldovans have lost their lives in the Second World War, while over 69 000 of them were never returned home.
Therefore, in front of the Nativity Cathedral will be arranged a feast, where war veterans will be invited to eat some porridge.
An exposition will also be inaugurated with photographs dedicated to the second world war. Guests will listen to the military fanfare and will be able to enjoy a show with K9.
Children will also have the chance to compete in painting on the asphalt. A special program, filled with surprises will also take place in the Great National Assembly Square starting 17:00 local time, where a concert will be held.
The stage will be taken by Plai Moldovenesc and Fraţilor Advahov orchestras, Amelia and Valentin Uzun, while people will be able to dance hora. Citizens who love classic music will also have the chance to listen to the great Eugen Doga.
The evening will end with a grand concert organized by Democratic Party, where multiple international singers will perform.
