African swine fever is spreading to Romania. Two new outbreaks have been confirmed in Buzau County, in two households. Authorities have announced that one of the families has recently received visits to relatives in Tulcea County, where there are more outbreaks of swine fever.
In another case of suspected swine fever, confirmation or refutation after laboratory testing is expected.
The prefect of Buzau County has announced that animals will not be slaughtered and concrete measures have been taken in isolated areas.
There are over 700 outbreaks of swine fever in Romania, and 120 thousand animals have been slaughtered so far. The worst situation is in the counties of Tulcea and Braila, where 4 pig farms have been closed. In Braila, the largest farm in Romania and the second largest in Eastern Europe was closed, and authorities began slaughtering over 140,000 pigs. The operation will take at least 4 weeks.
The Romanian livestock sector has been severely affected by the swine fever virus, and many farms and stores have closed down.
