US has stopped funding modernization program of Moldova's Army
The United States has stopped funding Moldova's National Army, money which was offered within an external program. The funds amount to is 12.7 million dollars a year, and were intended for the modernization of the army. The decision comes after Moldovan soldiers did not participate in regional applications because they did not have the permission of the head of state, Igor Dodon.
The announcement was made by former Defense Minister, Anatol Salaru, who wrote on a social networks that he would take Igor Dodon to court. According to Salaru, Dodon's actions undermine the national defense system.
With the US funding cut down, the politician also criticized Deputy Defense Minister, Gheorghe Galbura. In reply, president Igor Dodon says he will only authorize the participation of soldiers outside the country after a new Defense Minister has been appointed.
Representatives of the US Embassy in Moldova refused to comment on the matter, and the Moldovan Ministry of Defense said they would come up with a response later.
