Vlad Plahotniuc: Changing electoral system in full concordance with Venice Commission's recommendations
Democratic Party leader Vlad Plahotniuc has broached the change of the electoral system in Moldova at a news conference. He says the Venice Commission is to endorse its opinion concerning the bill sent by Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu, last month.
The Venice Commission is to voice its view as to the bill concerning the change of the electoral system. The PDM plans to openly consider the expertise of the Venice Commission, which comes up with a set of recommendations.
“We’ll have an array of consultations internally and externally after we get the recommendations. We’ll find the best formulas so that the change of the electoral system should be made in full concordance with the recommendations of the Venice Commission lawyers,” he stated.
“It’s regrettable the political opposition cowardly hides behind several NGOs and does not have the courage to openly get to the people and explain why they it wants to make them further vote MPs on party lists. Unknown and incompetent people may hide there. These people are afraid to directly contact citizens in elections, that’s why they don’t like the direct voting system,” Vlad Plahotniuc emphasized.
The PDM aims to go forward with changing the voting system, jointly with the citizens. It also aims to make this change in concordance with the best international practices in electoral matters.
