The late low temperatures and heavy rains have compromised the acacia honey harvest, one of the most popular products on the foreign market. The production reduced by 60% compared to last year.

The beekeepers claim that the price for this product will grow by 20%.

Andrei Zagarneanu is an experienced beekeeper with vast expertise. Now, he breeds over 300 bee families in Bozieni, Hancesti.

He says he now collects only 8 kilos of honey compared to 20 kilos in 2015.

"A comb full of honey should look like this. If the beekeeper extracts the honey out of this comb now, he will get about 1 kilo of honey, which is not good, compared to 3 or 4 kilos last year", said Andrei Zagarneanu.

Beekeepers claim that such a low harvest wasn't recorded in the last decade. Therefore, the honey price could increase by 20%.

Moldova exports the largest amount of honey in the European Union. The prices are often influenced by monopolies.

"For instance, Ukraine exported 30,000 tons to Europe last year. Moldova is barely producing 1,000 tons. Ukraine was selling polyfloral honey with MDL 11 per kilo, converting to our currency. But we sold it with MDL 42. At that point, Europe wondered why should it buy honey from Moldova, when it can buy it from Ukraine, Romania or Hungary," said the beekeeper Nicolae Haruta.

There are over 3,000 beekeepers in Moldova.

According to the National Association of Beekeepers, our country sold 800 tons of honey abroad in 2015.
