The devices in many Moldovan hospitals cannot be utilized because of a shortage of specialists. The bioengineers are a luxury for this country.

There are but 50 of them working, as the Health Ministry finds it needs five times more. 

"We submitted a request to the Education and Labor Ministries to raise the number of scholarships from 20 to 40," said a Health Ministry civil servant.

Since 2009, only 135 people have got diplomas of bioengineers from the Technical University of Moldova.
