In this academic year, more than 13,500 budget-funded places have been registered after competition in universities, nearly more four thousand places than last year. Many of them have remained uncovered. Teaching and agrarian faculties continue to receive applications from candidates.

This year, the Ion Creangă Pedagogical University also has over 30 seats free of charge. The less popular specialties are "Pre-school Pedagogy", "Informatics and Mathematics" and "Civic Education and History".

"Migration factor as well as demographic factor are main reasons. Young people withdrawing their papers are admitted to studies in Romania."

Agrarian University had to extend its admission period. There are 16 state-funded places remaining from 315 places offered here.

"Places remaining belong to the field of Horticulture, specialized in Wine-growing and Wine-making and Agricultural Biotechnologies," said Mihail Moroz, Deputy Secretary of the Admissions Commission, UASM.

Young people say these specialties are not profitable and are no longer popular:

"There are other more prestigious specialties that gain much benefit."

"IT and communications technologies are future fields."

In order to solve the problem, sociologists recommend reducing the number of universities in the country, but also improving the quality of studies.

"There are too many state universities. The policy to be taken by the government is to select the most competitive universities and to finance them consistently in order to raise their quality," said Petru Negura, a sociologist, university lecturer.

According to Minister of Labor, Stela Grigoraş, the admission plan is based on market demands, which is also confirmed by the statistical data. There are currently almost 400 vacancies in education and 135 in agriculture. The problem is that the specialties are not promoted by educational institutions. 

"Proposals are going to be come up to modify the admission plan, but in the future it is very important that these specialties which are not popular should be somehow promoted due to their demand in society," said Minister of Health and Labor.

Education Minister Monica Babuc says solutions are currently being sought to make faculties of pedagogical and agrarian profile more attractive:

"Some actions will also be taken in organizational terms to motivate young people to come to pedagogical specialties"

This year, some 1,300 students who paid tuition fees went to budget funding. In total, around 4,500 students attending the competition are taking studies with tuition. Young students in first year will receive monthly scholarships ranging from 630 to 800 lei, depending on the grades obtained.
