Sentenced convicts will be remotely monitored with smart bracelets
More than 130 devices have been assigned to the National Probation Inspectorate to monitor suspended people. There are 15 offenders are carrying them now.
According to the representative of Justice Ministry, this project's aimed at reducing the number of detainees in penitentiaries and give them the chance to associate with society. The new way of surveillance was presented today in a press conference.
Ion came to the penitentiary after finishing the high school, accused of robbing a woman her gold necklace. After spending a month in jail, he was sentenced suspension. He's monitored 24 hours a day with a bracelet. The boy is not allowed to leave the country and go to clubs.
"Freedom is much better. There is a chance to go out with a girl for a walk. Don't wait for someone to send you anything you want. I'm working now in a fruit and vegetable company in Ialoveni city."
The bracelets are monitored from a computer. If the gadget disappears from the inspector's watch, the person wearing the bracelet is called immediately. If the device's deliberately destroyed, the person must come back to jail.
"The people will wear the bracelets depending on their wishes, on their hand or leg. After they wear the device, it will registered in the monitoring platform," said Valeriu Melinte, Deputy Chief of the Monitoring of Probation Activities.
The Minister of Justice says that this project will significantly reduce expenditure.
"The measures do not consider the isolation of citizens over the social security. They will be included in a re-education program. The convicts are able to continue their lives, their studies, their work," Justice Minister Vladimir Cebotari said.
Over 190,000 lei from state budget was spent to purchase bracelets. Earlier this month, there were 11,000 people in the probation evidence.
In September, former Interim Prosecutor Director Vladimir Popa was detained for manipulating auction an electronic equipment to monitor detainees.
He damaged the state budget more than three million lei.
