Atlantic Council: Russia might affect the autumn elections from Moldova through ample disinformation campaigns
Atlantic Council believes that Russian influence might affect the autumn elections from Moldova through ample disinformation campaigns.
Experts spoke about Moldova's, Ukraine's and Georgia's geopolitics. The main topic being Moscow's expansionist tendencies.
"Atlantic Council strongly believes that we are facing major security threats in the so-call grey are, namely the countries from NATO and EU's West and Russia's East. The refusal to accept that all events from Georgia, Moldova, Nagorno-Karabakh, Donbass and Autonomous Republic of Crimea are tied among them, stood in the way of making a clear statement of the West toward Russia" John E. Herbst, director of the Atlantic Council's Dinu Patriciu Eurasia Center, declared.
"In 1999, Prime Minister Yevgeny Primakov told me that he wished to increase Russia's influence in Moldova. I was not surprised at the time and have yet to see this aim being changed over the years" representative of OSCE mission to Moldova, William Hill mentioned.
Defense Ministry Secretary of State, Dumitru Mânzărari, drew attention to the substantial resources Russia allocates for manipulative operations in Moldova.
"A new method is domination, as Russia continues to dominate the mass-media from Moldova, to paint NATO and USA as the enemies. It causes people to reject any support offered by NATO and USA to Republic of Moldova's Government" Dumitru Mînzărari explained.
Under such conditions, the Council believes that the autumn elections from Moldova will decide the country's future.
"Moldova faces a choice in this year's elections: half of the parties are clearly pro-European and support adherence to European Union, while the other half are pro-Russian and wish to be closer to Eurasian Economic Union. It creates favorable conditions for foreign influence in key areas, to lean the country in one direction, or another" William Hill stated.
At the meeting, the Council also spoke of the troops located in Transnistria.
