Victoria Iftodi participated at the Conference of Ministers of Justice on ECHR reforms
Justice Minister, Victoria Iftodi participated at the Conference of Ministers of Justice, dedicated to promoting the reform of the European Court of Human Rights, that is permanently overloaded.
Therefore, Republic of Moldova reaffirmed its duty to protect the humans rights and sustainability of the Court. The conference with the motto: "Continued Reform of the European Human Rights Convention System – Better Balance, Improved Protection", is held in Copenhagen and will unfold during April 11 - 13 2018.
"The fact that the European Court of Human Rights always has too much on its plate proves the necessity to reform the national justice systems and improve their performance in order to protect the humans rights. I am sure that it is essential to provide the Court with all necessary means to accelerate examination of cases, because late justice is in reality denial of justice" Justice Minister, Victoria Iftodi declared.
Minister of Justice also highlighted the importance of ensuring universality of the rights protected by the European Convention, including in interstate conflict areas.
"Republic of Moldova is facing interstate conflict with Russia. As European Court of Human Rights mentioned multiple times, Republic of Moldova lacks control over occupied territories. The ECHR reforms remains the single efficient method to remedy the breached human rights of people living in those territories."
The conference is attended by Justice Ministers from the European Council member states. It aims to bring into force the Copenhagen Declaration that will persuade the reforms launched by the 2010 Interlaken Declaration and continued by Izmir, Brighton and Brussels.
Through this declaration, European Council member states wish to consolidate the European Convention on Human Rights, by solving some urgent issues, such as: the big amount of cases submitted to the European Court of Human Rights and the inefficiency of the mechanisms for monitoring the execution of ECHR decisions.
