Pavel Filip was questioned in Brussels of the stolen billion
Prime Minister Pavel Filip is attending today the 4th meeting of the Association Council EU - Republic of Moldova, held in Brussels. Therefore, during press declarations, Pavel Filip was questioned of the investigation on the stolen billion and how much money were already recovered, as well as if those responsible will be brought to justice.
"More than one billion lei was recovered from the emergency credit, of course here we do not speak of recovering fraudulent assets, but of the payments that were made in the recovery procedure of the three banks and the accumulated credits. Much is spoken of the bank fraud scandal and allow me to explain. It is true that we made the emergency credit into public debt and that it was a decision agreed by all development partners. It was important to stabilize the banking system, otherwise Republic of Moldova would have lost more.
From the beginning the Government based its activity on three main points: 1. Strengthening the Central Bank, by elaborating a legal framework that will ensure that such frauds will not take place again in Republic of Moldova, which we succeeded, as we have investors from EU. 2. Investigate the fraud and bring all responsible people to justice. Many investigations are ongoing and suspects were identified. 3. Recovering the money and assets, which is not a simple thing. The fraud has been investigated for two years and a half now and I believe that the expectations of the partners and citizens were too high.
You will see examples in others countries that such investigations take many years. Those frauds are complicated and it was confirmed by international investigation companies. In the end, everybody responsible will be brought to justice. Meanwhile, we were forced to take measures to ensure Republic of Moldova's economic activity and stability" Pavel Filip said.
