PM Pavel Filip: Preventive detention is not the best method to combat financial crimes
Those who commit financial crimes do not need to be arrested all the time, as they do not pose the biggest threat to the society. While this measure, in certain cases, can only cause distrust in the country's justice system. The declarations were made by Prime Minister Pavel Filip during today's Government meeting.
"Many reforms were made for the business environment. The main element that is crucial for any state is justice. An investor will only be interested in countries where they know that in case a taken risk will backfire, they will have a fair trial. Lately we have spoken much with representatives of the business environment, as well as our development partners on preventive detention. It was established that preventive detention is abused, as sometimes there are no reasons given for it. Even if the law was adjusted, this problem was not fully solved.
The number of arrests grow, there are cases when this measure is excessive, then the detention becomes prolonged, which causes distrust in justice. Preventive detention must be made as last resort, there are also other measures that can be taken: such as judicial control, warning, home arrest. Not in all cases of financial crimes people must be arrested, as they do not pose the biggest threat to the society" Pavel Filip said.
At the same time, Prime Minister mentioned that lack of transparency in trials is a problem, while closed court hearing are simply only made to discredit the reforms.
"We can input much work and effort, I previously spoke of implementing the justice reform strategy. I know much work is done at the Justice Ministry, but those elements are only ruining all this hard work" Pavel Filip emphasized.
