Training against Illicit Trafficking in Nuclear and Radioactive Materials organized by US Department of Energy
The Customs Service Training Center hosted a training course in the field of combating illicit trafficking in nuclear and radioactive materials.
The training was organized by the US Department of Energy and supported by experts from the North American National Laboratory in the US.
Among the participants were representatives of the customs and border authorities of the Republic of Moldova, Mexico, Croatia, Bulgaria and Kazakhstan.
During the sessions, the participants strengthened their abilities of public speaking, to synthesize information or to assess their knowledge.
Moreover, theoretical sessions have been alternated by practical ones so that participants can analyze and eventually improve performance.
The training course was organized in the framework of the Nuclear Smuggling Detection and Deterrence Program (NSDD), funded by the US Government and launched in 2012.
Also under this program, 22 customs posts were equipped with stationary portal monitors for the detection of radioactive and nuclear materials, and three mobile radiation detection systems were donated.
Implementation of this program is carried out on the basis of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Customs Service of the Republic of Moldova and the United States Department of Energy on Cooperation for the Prevention of Illicit Trafficking in Nuclear Material and Other Radioactive Materials signed on 19 July 2011.
