Moldova's President Igor Dodon expressed his dissent from the government assumption of legal responsibility for pre-selecting a list of candidates for general prosecutor. Under the proposed changes, this list will be made by prime minister who will send to the Superior Council of Prosecutors (SCP). 

"This concept, which is set in stone in the Constitution, does not imply all these filters and does not imply that a politician, for example, the prime minister will assume the responsibility and say: This is the prosecutor! It's not like that! It's non-constitutional. After criticizing vehemently the former government for politicizing the state institutions, is this different? Now she wants to bring back such practices. A party leader insists proposing two candidates for general prosecutor", Igor Dodon announced on a private TV. 

The head of state also said he was dissatisfied with the Government's activity in several areas.  

"I wished this parliamentary majority to find a solution. The Socialists held a meeting of parliamentary faction. Then, they will meet in the Republic Council to make the next decisions after the Government assumed responsibility", Dodon said.  

According to Igor Dodon, the fate of the Sandu Cabinet will be decided within 72 hours. The term expires from the moment the executive assumed responsibility. 

"Within 72 hours, the Government will either fall or continue to work. This assumption denotes an interesting situation. She could have discussed this topic with the alliance colleagues. In the agreement between the Socialist and bloc ACUM, it is written clearly the procedure to propose the general prosecutor: commission of judges, SCP, president. I and Maia Sandu signed it. Another approach is proposed unilaterally in violation of that agreement. It could lead to the fall of the Government", Igor Dodon stressed. 

The best solution in this situation, according to the head of state, is the Government's withdrawal of that responsibility and coalition partners will come for discussion. 

The government assumed responsibility for a draft law which provides for amendment of the rules for selecting candidates for the position of Prosecutor General. The decision was approved at a Wednesday's cabinet meeting.

Under the proposed changes, the prime minister will be the one who will pre-select at least two candidates for the position of Prosecutor General. Subsequently, the list of candidates will be sent to the Superior Council of Prosecutors, who will submit to the head of state the nomination for the position of Prosecutor General.
