Urgent meeting between US Ambassador, EU Delegation Head and PM Sandu amid splits on government assumption
Before the meeting between Moldova's President Igor Dodon and the US Ambassador to Moldova Dereck Hogan, the foreign diplomats also held a meeting with PM Maia Sandu yesterday to discuss the government assumption.
"They heard of this initiative and came to document the plan. I explained all details to them. The meeting was held at their request", Maia Sandu announced on a private television.
The chief of the Cabinet also stated the officials were fully aware of the risk of the government collapse and the need to organize an early election.
"Obviously they are aware of all the risks and still wish to continue the reforms. We only carry on the reforms when we make sure we can do it. This judicial reform is a condition based on which we receive the ongoing financial assistance from the foreign institutions. It's not only our wish but also our obligation to advance the judicial reforms, if we want to rely on the foreign resources to assist the budget so that we can implement other social programs that the Socialist Party want", Maia Sandu stressed.
The Government yesterday assumed responsibility for a draft law which provides for amendment of the rules for selecting candidates for the position of Prosecutor General. Accordingly, the prime minister will be the one who will pre-select at least two candidates for the position of Prosecutor General. Then, the list of candidates will be sent to the Superior Council of Prosecutors, who will submit to the head of state the nomination for the position of Prosecutor General.
Both US Ambassador Dereck Hogan and Head of EU Delegation to Moldova Peter Michalko were seen leaving the Government headquarter last evening.
