Andrei Covri: Russian troops located in Transnistria pose a threat to national security
Republic of Moldova must have an army that can withstand any threat. Those were the opinions of yesterday's guests at Fabrika, who spoke of PDM's initiative to introduce military service based on a contract. Experts mentioned that the authors must also calculate the expenses necessary for the implementation of the project.
"Let us say that there are 4 000 soldiers. Can we ensure them all with a social package? This is a question that requires answers. They have families, spouses, children, we must take that into consideration" former deputy chief of National Army General Staff, Andrei Covrig said.
"If they were explained the benefits of a contract, many would chose to serve at least 3 years, having housing, a job, the chance to study part-time and then after three years decide their next move" former Defense Minister, Vitalie Mereuţa explained.
Andrei Covrig believes that the Russian soldiers located in Transnistria pose a big threat to national security.
"The Russian troops located in Transnistria pose a threat and we cannot deny it. We must see the full picture, the danger they pose and make conclusions" Andrei Covrig said.
Vlad Plahotniuc announced on Tuesday, after the PDM's weekly meeting, that the party wishes for military service to no longer be compulsory. The decision was taken due to the fact that at the moment, many young people pay money to avoid being enrolled in the army, in the end the recruits being only those who lack the financial means.
