Changes in law on domestic violence. Aggressors risk life imprisonment
Domestic violence will be punished with imprisonment up to 20 years or life imprisonment. Changes occur on the initiative of the General Police Inspectorate.
Thus, the aggressor risks unpaid community work for 40 to 60 hours or arrest for 7 to 15 days.
For physical, sexual, psychological, spiritual or economic, including threats, which have caused material or moral injury victim, aggressor risks imprisonment up to 20 years or life imprisonment.
Moreover, starting with March 16th, 2017, the police will enforce the urgent restraining order, as an interim measure of protection for victims of domestic violence, after which will be possible the immediate removal of the aggressor and establish of prohibitions which will ensure safety of the victim and other family members.
The impact of changes to legislation are already visible through a slight decrease in cases of domestic violence in 2016 compared to 2015.
