Chisinau City Hall invested millions of lei in empty schools and damaged buildings
Chisinau City Hall has invested, four years ago, two million lei to repair No. 52 Middle School from Buiucani, that was closed down in 2012. The roof was changed, walls were repaired and the gym renovated. Words were never finished though, as the Department for Constructions declared the building damaged.
"The building is damaged and needs proper investigation. We believe that it either needs to be preserved or demolished" head of Department for Constructions, Alexandru Panfili said.
The building, meant for 750 pupils, belongs to Buiucani Education Department. Representatives confirm the statement offered by experts, but insist for the school to be repaired and reopened.
"We cannot allow this institution to be demolished, as it is located in a zone with new infrastructure and many apartment blocks" head of Buiucani Education Department, Veronica Solomiţchi said.
Interim Mayor, Ruslan Codreanu does not agree with the Education Department.
"The technical design was made sloppy and engineers say that the building must be taken down, which means that the money were invested for nothing. We will not allow children to be placed in a dangerous institution" Interim Mayor, Ruslan Codreanu said.
A similar situation is also met at No. 86 Middle School. In 2012, the institution initiated a renovation project worth 3 million lei. The works were stopped, because the building is too damaged to be used.
"There is a big crack in the middle of the building. It was constructed back in 1940 and the norms were not respected. If it is ever hit by a 7 magnitude earthquake, the consequences will be grave" Alexandru Panfili said.
The institution's administration disagrees.
"Around 5-6 years ago the building was inspected and it was declared no threat for pupils. It lived through many earthquakes and still stands tall. It poses no danger to people" director of No. 86 Middle School, Gheorghe Varsan said.
At the moment, the middle school is attended by 250 children.
