Representatives of Moldova’s ethnic minorities back up introducing the uninominal voting. They’re confident their interests will thus be protected and will be represented by people they know, who care about their communities. The statements were made last night on a talk show on Publika TV.

“It’s more convenient for the Roma to have a constituency-based voting system. The people will thus be freer and would vote for a person they know," said Nicolae Radiţa, a leader with an organization of Moldova’s Gypsies.

Victor Grebenşcikov thinks people must realize clearly what changing the electoral system means and why this is in the citizen’s interest: "The uninominal voting offers additional possibilities indeed. It’s very important that the constituency boundaries coincide with the areas lived by some minorities."

"The Ukrainians are scattered in several districts and we don’t have a district where they would form a majority of 70 or 80 per cent. We must fight for our rights as ethnic minorities," said Mihai Bagas, the president of the Ukrainians Association.

The bill was submitted to the Parliament and sent to the Venice Commission.

Most recent poll show almost 80 % of Moldovans want to elect the MPs directly.
