Governor of NBM represented Republic of Moldova at the annual meeting of EBRD
Sergiu Cioclea, Governor of Central bank and alternate Governor of the Republic of Moldova to the EBRD, represented our country at the annual meeting of European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, that took place between May 8-10, 2018 in Jordan.
President of EBRD, Suma Chakrabarti, mentioned that among the institution's most important project signed in 2017 is the energy interconnection between Republic of Moldova and Romania.
In his turn, Sergiu Cioclea, mentioned that in 2017 EBRD has made a record investment in Republic of Moldova, of over 130 million Euro, confirming therefore its position as investment leader with a total 1.1 billion Euro invested in around 120 projects from the country. Governor of NBM urged EBRD to continue supporting Moldova's banking sector, participating in the capital of one of Moldova's biggest banks.
During the debates, Suma Chakrabarti requested the opinion of the present members regarding eventual extension of institution's operations in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Sergiu Cioclea presented the opinion of Moldovan authorities mentponing that such an expansion is acceptable, as long as it does not enrages EBRD's short and long term aims in countries it is currently operation, including Republic of Moldova. To determine the possibility of EBRD's extension beyond Europe, Republic of Moldova requested for a research to be made and an active dialogue with traditional development partners from Sub-Saharan Africa, such as World Bank, African Development Bank, UN etc. to be held, in order to avoid any overlapping of activities.
EBRD leaders will following forward for discussions a synthesis and will inform national authorities regarding the institution's next steps in the field.
At the same time, EBRD's area of activity will remain unchanged by 2020, the deadline for achieving currently set operations and investments.
During the event, Sergiu Cioclea met with multiple high-ranking officials of EBRD and with institution's board of directors to explain the progress of Republic of Moldova's economic reform.
Governor of the National Bank of Moldova has also met with heads of national delegations present at the event (USA, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Romania, Croatia, Serbia, Turkey, Ukraine, Kyrgystan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, etc.), representatives of the European Commission, directors of some international banking institutions, investors and foreign journalists.
Sergiu Cioclea also spoke with Eugen Teodorovici, Minister of Public Finance of Romania, on intensifying relations between our countries within the EBRD cooperation aiming to increase and accelerate projects of common interest.
