The Head of the Cahul Custom Control from the border with Romania, Vasile Bacalu, was detained today by Internal Protection and Anti-corruption Service of Ministry of Internal Affairs (SPIA) and Cahul prosecutors, for 72 hours, in a cigarette-smuggling file. 

The criminal case started after the Romanian Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) found out about a criminal group which illegally smuggling big quantities of tobacco. 

In the February - May 2019 period, the group members smuggled 116 360 packs of cigarettes worth over 1 163 600 MDL.

The case is being investigated.
