Moldova put off again deadline for digital television transition
The Economy Minister Anatolie Usatîi announced the process of switching to digital television was put off until May. It was supposed to finish in March. The responsible didn't manage to purchase the converters for needy families.
"According to the plans, the analog transmission will be changed to digital one in May 1st. Everything is technically ready. More than 95% of the territory is already covered, "said Economy Minister Anatol Usati.
Meanwhile, the authorities must establish the list of families receiving social assistance, who are to receive free converters. A draft decision in this regard has been approved by the Government. The final number of applicants must be ready by March 27th. The auction for the device purchase has not started yet.
"We will announce the auction immediately after the Government meeting. A notice to participate in the auction was announced in January," said Economy Minister Anatol Usatîi.
Moldova committed to complete the transition to digital terrestrial television no later than 17 June 2015. Moldova signed the Agreement of the Regional Radiocommunication Conference (RRC) in Geneva in 2006, along with more than 100 countries.
In Moldova, several deadlines have been given for the implementation of this commitment. Currently, only a few television broadcast stations stop broadcasting in analog format and broadcast only in digital format including Publika TV, Prime, Canal2, CANAL 3.
The state has committed to buy converters for citizens who benefit from social protection. So far, only 9000 of the 40,000 people in this category have received the devices.
