NAC raid: Customs brokers detained over bribery suspicion
Searches were carried out at the "Petricani" internal customs post. Five customs brokers were detained by National Anticorruption Centre (NAC) officers, anti-corruption prosecutors and employees of the Integrity and Supervision Directorate of the Customs Service, in an active corruption case.
They are suspected of bribing the customs officers within the Petricani Internal Customs Station, by sending different amounts of money to speed up the procedure for validating the customs declarations.
According to the case materials, the brokers were documented inside the customs post at the time when they transmitted to the customs workers the accompanying documents of the goods with attached money.
Following several searches carried out inside the customs post and in the service offices of the brokers, 11 people, out of which 6 customs officers and 5 brokers, were recognized as suspects. They were escorted to the NAC for further hearings, with 5 brokers being detained for 72 hours.
The detainees are investigated in accordance with art. 325 criminal code - active corruption and risks up to 6 years in prison with a fine ranging from 100000 lei to 200000 lei.
Prosecutions in this case are ongoing and target a complex scheme that includes customs officers, brokers and economic agents.
