NAC searched ASEM. Students paid up to 1 000 lei for an exam and 400-550 Euro for thesis
Paid examinations, thesis, as well as marks for practice - were all part of an organized network, formed out of dozens of people, among whom counted lecturers from Academy of Economic Studies of Moldova and multiple third parties. The scheme was discovered by NAC and anticorruption prosecutors, after the institution was searched, as well as other sources.
Within the case were documented multiple members of the network, while evidence includes audio and video files, confirming the preliminary information.
Throughout the documentation, it was established that the corruption act would take place right in front of the institution, where third parties were monitored.
They were responsible for identifying students that failed to pass examinations, offering to help them to successfully pass any type of exam.
Later, in exchange for money, the amount depending on the type of services, the third parties would visit individuals from ASEM, especially teachers, offering them part of the money to solve the issue, while another part was kept as a fee for the third party's services.
During the investigation it was established that for an exam, members of the group could receive from a student to 1 000 lei, the mark for practice varying between 1 000 and 1 500 lei, the most expensive being the thesis exam for undergraduate and graduate, between 400 and 550 Euro. Following, students were evaluated by fictive teachers, most of them not even being present at the exam.
To this point were identified around 60 teachers and other staff members from ASEM, suspected of having turned examinations into business. They were registered while speaking on the phone and during meetings with other members of the group, receiving from them money, documents and exchanging other documents to realize the crime.
Prosecutors opened multiple cases for passive corruption, active corruption, influence peddling.
To fortify the evidence, NAC along with Anticorruption Prosecutors have searched Academy of Economic Studies of Moldova, the suspects' officers and houses, as well as of other members of the group.
During the investigation were found the names of the students and the money received from them, the name of the teachers who were given the money in exchange for exams, practice and thesis. Following the searches, 9 people, among which 6 are teachers from ASEM and 3 third parties, were arrested for 72 hours.
The investigation is ongoing to establish the identity of all the persons implicated in the criminal network.
ASEM's administration is fully cooperating with the investigation to identify the staff members implicated in the fraud.
