National Wine Day celebrates Moldovan Wine - a high quality product created with passion, dedication and love by thousands of people working in the wine industry. It is, first of all, their feast, which is why it has become a beautiful tradition as in the first weekend of October, the professionals and the wine companies are awarded for outstanding results and contributions to the development of the sector and implicitly to the promotion of the Republic of Moldova as first-rate wine country.
At this year's National Wine Day, the sector's performances were rewarded with prizes given by Prime Minister Pavel Filip, Minister of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment, Nicolae Ciubuc, and Director of the National Office of Vine and Wine, Gheorghe Arpentin .
The Great Wine Award for 2018 was awarded to Salcuta for outstanding merits in the production of high quality wines, the perpetuation of the traditions and excellent quality of local wines, as well as the promotion of the image of the Republic of Moldova as a wine country on the international arena.
Recently, the company has suffered an irretrievable loss - the founder Salcuta Eugen Pislaru, one of the great reformers of the domestic wine sector, died.
A new distinction, introduced for the first time in the 17th edition of the National Wine Day, comes to pay tribute to viticulturist Nicolae Guzun, the viticulturist who contributed to the development of over 20 new varieties resistant to diseases and low temperatures, including the famous Moldavian variety.
The medal named after the scholar, along with the title Viticultor of the Year, was handed to Petru Baltag, director of agriculture, Calarasi Divin, thus appreciating his outstanding successes in viticulture, implementation of advanced technologies in viticulture and setting up of vineyards new intended for the production of wine products with Protected Geographical Indication.
The Medal named after the world-famous Moldovan scientist Petru Ungureanu, author of multiple inventions related to the wine production technology, along with the title of the most prestigious oenologist of the year, was offered to Petru Vicol, an oenologist at Asconi winery.
The Medal of Gratitude "The Wine of Moldova, a Legend of Life" for outstanding merits in the training and education of the cadres in the wine industry was awarded Prof. univ. Dr. Anatolie Bălănuţă, Head of Oenology Department, UTM.
Purcari Winery was awarded the Thanksgiving Medal of "Wine of Moldova, A Legend of Life" for special merits in promoting the Republic of Moldova on the international arena.
Following the award of the best quality wines with Protected Geographical Indication from each PGI Region: Factory Winery for the Traian Wave PGI Region; Bravo Wines winery for PGI Stefan Ştefan Vodă; Asconi winery for Codru IGP Region.

Applications for prizes for excellence in the wine sector are proposed and evaluated by a national panel of experts.
