New reform could amalgamate RTEC with Urban Bus Park
The Electric Transport Administration and the Urban Bus Park could be merged into one institution.
The initiative came from the Institute for European Policies and Reforms and was supported by the Open Society Foundation.
The improvement of infrastructure and transport has been discussed in public hearings.
The initiative authors claim this reform could enhance the efficiency of the services and optimize the municipal budget.
"If last year's revenues from the sale of tickets amounted to 235 million lei, the salaries of the staff of these two enterprises exceeded 250 million lei," said researcher Stanislav Ghileţchi.
Representatives of the Chisinau Electric Transport Administration avoided to come up with some clarification, stating that a more profound study is needed.
While the Electric Transport Administration is analyzing the proposed subject, the union committee is thinking about the future of its employees.
"I agree with electronic tickets but 700 people will be fired, we have to place them elsewhere," said Lavrentie Tâgalo, chairman of the RTEC trade union committee.
The authorities, however, say they will examine this project and will soon try to implement the new reforms.
According to statistics, the number of passengers is decreasing as more and more people opt for a private car.
On the other hand, the subsidies offered by the City Hall increased by about 20 percent in two years, the total amount reaching 450 million in 10 years.
Implementation of the project would generate savings for the municipal budget of about 57 million lei annually.
