Only natural dairy products. The products containing vegetal additions to be renamed
Branza, cream or cheese containing vegetable fats and other additions can be found on store shelves under other trade names. According to the new legislation, which comes into force tomorrow, these products will be removed from the dairy category, not to create confusion among consumers. The authors of the project argue that the initiative comes primarily to improve the quality of dairy products, both domestic and imported, and to increase the demand for products where milk is used as a raw material.
'The document strictly prohibits the use of vegetable fats in dairy products. Factories may produce food, but the trade name will not contain the notion of cheese, cream. The names given are used only for products containing milk as a raw material and have milk derivatives. The factories and the stores had enough time to comply with these requirements? The document was published on March 2019, in accordance with law 100, all normative acts come into force after half a year', said Carolina Linte, the president of the Producers Association and Milk Processors.
The processing plants do not fully agree with these new provisions. Even so, business administrators say they will comply with the requirements, but they acknowledge that they will not exceed the deadline required by law.
- All over the world, products containing vegetable fats have no marketing restrictions and are not separated from the others. Come in and see this in any German supermarket that they are on the dairy shelf.
- But are you ready to put them on the market under another name?
- Probably yes. It all depends on the packaging reserve. We do not order boxes for a day or two, commented the manager of a dairy factory, Elena Belan.
People say that they don't always draw attention to the product label. They say that it would be much easier for them if these food categories were separated on the shelves.
'We want every product to be on its shelf. Some people don't know, don't look, and it's really bad. Be it the clear label, these are vegetable or dairy fats. It's all clear'.
'Dairy product is a product obtained exclusively from milk. In order not to mislead the consumer, these products cannot be called dairy products. They are called generically, food based on milk and vegetable fats. Their addition must be very visible on the label', communicated UTM food technology specialist, Liliana Popescu.
The new law comes into force on September 29.
