Parliament adopted the bill on the redirection of a part of the National Bank of Moldova’s profit to the state budget.
Socialists praised that the move would soften the financial burden on the public in paying back some $50 million a year for the next 21 years to remedy the so-called ‘grand theft’ of $1 billion from the Moldovan banking system in 2014. And the citizens will no longer have to pay to cover fraud in the banking system.
The document has sparked criticism from several opposition MPs.
"Please clarify and answer the question whether the obligation to recover the obligations assumed by the Government remains the responsibility of the state budget," said the member of the PRO MOLDOVA group, Vladimir Cebotari.
"This bill can't help recover the stolen money. The burden still remains on the citizens", said PAS MP Sergiu Litvinenco.
The project was supported in the second reading by 52 of the PSRM and PDM MPs.
