UNFPA will hold public debates on Health Education for Young People
In 22 localities from Orhei, Rezina, Fălești, Cahul and Chișinău will take place public debates on the rights of teenagers and young people to receive health education. It aims to rise awareness in the community of the health risks teenagers face and to increase the demand of health education in school.
Health Education is taught at schools by request. Between 2017-2018, over 23 000 teenagers have requested to learn this subject, it being only 7% of the total number of teenagers requiring this knowledge.
In Republic of Moldova live over 330 000 teenagers, aged between 10 - 19 years old, or 12% of the country's population. Many of them face heath threats. Each year, over 2 400 girls encounter unintended pregnancies. Each tenth abortion being requested by teenagers aged between 15 and 19 years old, while sexually transmitted infections having high rates in Easter Europe.
Starting November 2017, UNFPA and Ministry of Education, Culture and Research are completing the terms of a collaboration memorandum on promoting health education in schools. It also foresees the health education curriculum to be reviewed, to include proper information based on age, gander and environment.
The debates are part of the Promoting Heath Education for Young People project, of UNFPA, with the support of Embassy of the Netherlands and in collaboration with Ministry of Education, Culture and Research, Y-PEER International Center for Youth Development, Partnerships for Every Child and Educational Center PRO DIDACTICA.
