Valerijus Simulik on the mixed electoral system: It is a progress for the society
Republic of Moldova has made an important step in ensuring democracy in the general elections, by using the mixed electoral system. Therefore, deputies will be more responsible to the people who chose them regarding the promises made during the campaign. This was the opinion of Lithuanian deputy, Valerijus Simulik, co-chairman of the parliamentary friendship group with Moldova, within an interview offered for Publika TV. In his country, Simulik reached his fifth mandate.
Deputy Valerijus Simulik claims that he is being trusted by citizens since 2000.
"We, deputies, chosen through mixed electoral system, on each Monday are meeting with people. Friday and Saturday, are also working days. I believe that people trust me, since despite begin a former school teacher, I was voted already five times" Valerijus Simulik said.
Lithuanian deputy claims that the decision of Moldovan authorities to implement the mixed electoral system will make the political class more responsible.
"I congratulate Moldova and its people with this decision. It is a progress for the society, because things are improving. The people will be heard better, there will be more ideas in the Parliament. People will be the ones to chose who will represent them. But I hope, as well as based on our country's experience, that deputies from the region, will have a different way of thinking, they are more free" Valerijus Simulik said.
At the same time, Valerijus Simulik has also expressed his confusion regarding the declaration made on this decision by Lithuanian MEP, Petras Austrevicius, who was chosen three times through the mixed electoral system.
"Mr. Petras wishes for us to have the same opinion as him. My colleague did not mean what he said. I believe he wished to be noticed, or certain opponents requested him to share his opinion. He gained a mandate through the mixed electoral system and doubts that this system is good. I believe this to be a bit strange" Valerijus Simulik declared.
