The law project regarding the security of informational space has received today positive reviews from the Mass Media Parliamentary Commission, while on Thursday or Friday, it will be debated at the plenary session. The suggestion to change the Audiovisual Code came from Democratic Party of Moldova.

The project is supported by European People's Party of Moldova.

According to authorities, the project aims to combat foreign propaganda spreading through broadcasts.

The ban only views informative, analytical and military programs.

PDM specifies that this initiative has no intention to shut down any channels, but simply to eliminate programs spreading propaganda.

"Propaganda and foreign manipulations threatens the national security of Republic of Moldova, a threat which not only Moldova faces, but also European Union. In USA, starting February, all channels which broadcast foreign political debates will be banned" PDM deputy, Sergiu Sîrbu declared.

"I will vote for this project, as it will stop some of the Russian propaganda which is retransmitted. As a war can be won with other weapons than firearms" PL deputy Lilian Carp said,

The project has not received support from PLDM deputy Maria Ciobanu and two socialists from the Cultural Commission.

"You wish to remove from the constitution the freedom of speech, the freedom of press, you wish to eliminate all that doesn't sit well with you" PSRM deputy Vlad Batrâncea said.

The project is meant for TV channels broadcast by countries that have not ratified the  European Convention on Transfrontier Television. This document was not ratified by Russian Federation.

Politic analysts and journalists claim that this initiative is a long awaited one, in the context of latest development in the region.

"This law project is a long waited solution, but better late than never. It is based on Russia's threat toward Europe. For western democracy" editorialist Petru Bogatu declared.

PDM's project foresees 40 000 to 70 000 lei sanctions. In case the breach is repeated, it will raise to 100 000 lei, while the most strict punishment being the licence withdrawal.
