ASEM corruption case. Suspects stand trial, while their relatives are acting hostile
The three people that acted as third parties in the ASEM corruption case received 30 days of preventive detention each. At the same time, one of the six teaches received one moth of house arrest, while another was placed under judicial control. The decision was taken today by Buiucani Court. Following the searches performed at the houses and officers, 9 people were arrested and over 2 million lei seized.
The first to receive a court hearing was a teacher that was placed under judicial control. The woman's relative, who attended the trial, was aggressive toward mass media.
The teacher's lawyer declared his client not guilty. The judicial control is a preventive measure for their plea, therefore it will not be appealed, added her lawyer.
"Officers have not found any evidence in her house, car or office" lawyer Silviu Burlacu said.
Another teacher was placed under house arrest. at the same time, the three intermediates who were identifying students will spend the next 30 days in NAC's jail.
Another three teachers are currently detained by NAC for 72 hours. Later, after the term expires, they will be set free. A total of nine people are suspected of accepting bribery from students. For a passing mark, the teachers would receive between 1 000 and 1 500 lei, while to assist both graduate and undergraduate students to pass their thesis examination they were paid to 550 Euro. Prosecutors opened multiple cases for passive corruption, active corruption, influence peddling.
"The investigation is ongoing, we will following establish the identity of all accomplices and participants of the crime. Some collaborate with law enforcement and we will following analyze their stories. Some refused to collaborate and that is their right" prosecutor Mariana Botezatu declared.
ASEM's administration is fully cooperating with the investigation to identify the staff members implicated in the fraud.
The case also caught the eye of Prime Minister Pavel Filip, who claimed that such actions are destroying the country's future and mock those who input effort in studying.
