The authorities want to set up COVID-19 sections for children in the district hospitals, after the hospital bed capacities in Chisinau are becoming strained. Over 1300 children have infected with COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic. Most patients are between 11 and 17 years old.
Ludmila, a mother from Chisinau, is hospitalized with her four-year-old boy at the Municipal Clinical Hospital for Infectious Diseases for Children. The woman says that the little one most likely became infected at the playground in the block's yard.
"The first symptoms appeared on July 16. Then he told me he had a headache and felt tired. He had a fever, 37.4 degrees. We were hospitalized at lgnatenco hospital as a suspicious case, they did the test and in the evening they confirmed COVID-19 and transferred us here'', Said Ludmila, mother.
Currently, out of the 100 places available for children in this hospital, 74 are occupied. Patients from all over the country are brought here, because the disease can cause severe complications.
"In children, Kawasaki syndrome most often occurs as a complication lately. It is linked to coronavirus cases, which is a widespread inflammation in the autoimmune system and can cause thrombotic heart complications in children, "said Diana Vlad, an infectious disease doctor at the Municipal Clinical Hospital for Contagious Diseases for Children.
Lately, the number of diseases has increased among children. All minor patients end up in three hospitals in the Capital and one in Balti. Authorities want to reshape some sections of the District Hospitals in the south of Moldova.
According to the Ministry of Health, 10 children with COVID-19 in an extremely serious condition are hospitalized at the Institute of Mother and Child in the Capital.
