Johannes Hahn: Undertaken reforms bring Moldova closer to EU
The European Commissioner Johannes Hahn has met with Moldovan Prime Minister Pavel Filip at today's meeting in Brussels. The topics discussed were the recommendations of the Venice Commission on the electoral reform.
According to Johannes Hahn, the EU expects Moldova to fully respect the recommendations of the Venice Commission.
"The Prime Minister and myself had the opportunity to discuss today, of course, the electoral reform, and check the position of the EU, which is also my position, there is no difference of it, it is very clear. The opinion made on the request of the Moldovan authority, should be fully taken into account. The EU has helped European states for almost 25 years, to implement our common values. It has all the rights to analyze the key legislative changes and make purely legal considerations. Therefore, we expect Republic of Moldova to fully respect the conditions and recommendations of the Venice Commission" , said the European Commissioner.
Also, the introduction of the mixed electoral system is a fundamental change that should be adapted to the political context in the country.
"The introduction of the mixed electoral system is a fundamental change that could be a serious risk in the rule of democracy, and political context in Moldova. Any electoral form should be adapted to the political context. It has to be guided by the interest of voters and the general expression and avoid favoring any political hector. We will continue meeting another political forces in the country, to hear their views. I don't hide if I'm saying the discussions are key components in our assessment" , said Johannes Hahn.
The European Commissioner highlighted that the reforms undertaken bring Moldova closer to the EU.
"We have discussed with Pavel Filip, and it's important to fight against corruption, reforms should be delivered, and if we see results, this will bring Moldova closer to the EU. Of course now, we have a urgency with this electoral code issue, and I hope it can be find a solution based of the opinion of the Venice Commission" , said the European Commission.
