Nature reserve Plaiul Fagului is in danger. Nearly 95% of the forest is affected by harmful insects
Nature reserve "Plaiul Fagului" from Ungheni district is in danger. Climate changes has brought forth the development of harmful insects in the past few years, threatening the Fraxinus trees. To stop this phenomenon, the forest requires urgent treatment.
In 2015, a helicopter was used to spray chemical treatment, but the protected area of 780 hectares was left out.
"The insects have shifted to other trees from the reserve" forestry engineer of "Plaiul Fagului", Anton Găluşcă said.
During winter, the harmful insects hide in the trees barks, or under the ground. Once it warms up, they begin eating the buds and then the leaves. At the moment, 95% of the Ash trees are being affected.
"The attack will begin in the middle of April and will last to the end of May. The trees will weaken and it will harm the trunks. We can already say that the forest is lost" forestry engineer, Petru Chiorchină declared.
Because the trees are rotting, employees have to cut them down. Some trees are collapsing by themselves.
"In the past 10 years, the numbers of cut trees grew by 12 times. We need to evacuate the trees from the site in order to not allow the insects to spread" forestry engineer Anton Găluşcă said.
Recently, the Government approved a law allowing the usage of pesticides to eliminate all harmful insects, including in the protected area from the reserve.
"In the next 3 years we will see more harmful insects. Measures need to be taken to eliminate them from the whole territory" Minister of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment, Liviu Volconovici explained.
Experts claim that for a single treatment of the over 5 000 hectares of forest are required 2.3 million lei.
