Potato harvest weaker than expected: Moldovan farmers
The Moldovan farmers have harvested fewer potatoes this year. Last year, they harvested as much as 35 tonnes per ha, but this year but 25 tonnes.
The causes are known: high temperatures and insufficient rains.
Representatives of the Potato Growers Association say a similar situation is reported in neighboring Ukraine and Romania. Although the harvest is smaller, the farmers assure there is no potato crisis looming.
Now, 1 kg of potatoes is 5-7 lei ($0.3), as the price is expected to get down after the harvest is over.
