Republic of Moldova marks 25 years of partnership with Council of Europe
The Republic of Moldova marks 25 years of partnership with the Council of Europe. On this occasion, President Igor Dodon and Prime Minister Ion Chicu sent congratulatory messages. The two officials expressed confidence that this partnership will advance through new initiatives and the development of existing cooperation potential.
"Today's event gives us the opportunity to review the achievements of the existing partnership, which were possible only thanks to the support and expertise of the Council of Europe. The implementation of European reforms and standards has brought considerable benefits to the entire Moldovan society, including freedom of expression and association, cultural and educational variety, diversification of human rights protection mechanisms. Direct access of citizens to the European Court of Human Rights is an advantage, but also a reflection of the systemic problems in society, which we set out to regulate them through the reform of the judiciary. Our ultimate goal must be to ensure independent justice, access to quality education and security in our home - the Republic of Moldova ", according to Igor Dodon's message.
"As Prime Minister, I would like to thank the Secretary General of the Council of Europe for setting up and working for the Council of Europe's High-Level Ad Hoc Working Group on Justice Reform, which has joined us in advancing the COVID-19 pandemic. the process of amending the constitutional provisions with reference to the Superior Council of Magistracy, as well as in finalizing the projects of the Strategy for Ensuring the Independence and Integrity of the Justice Sector for 2020-2023 and its Action Plan. These steps are decisive in the agenda of internal transformations and the course of European integration of the Republic of Moldova ", mentioned the Prime Minister Ion Chicu.
The Republic of Moldova signed on July 13, 1995, in Strasbourg, the documents of accession to the Council of Europe, thus becoming the 36th member of the organization and taking the first step towards integration into the European value space. On the same day, the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms was signed, which, once ratified, gave every resident of the Republic of Moldova the right to have direct access to the European Court of Human Rights - one of the most effective intergovernmental mechanisms for ensuring respect for human rights.
