Unsatisfactory conditions in Moldovan kindergartens: no drinking water and outdoors toilets
In 40% of kindergartens throughout the country the toilets are outdoors, and the children do not have adequate hygienic conditions. This is the conclusion of a study performed by the Public Health National Centre with the support of UNICEF. The research also shows that many preschool institutions do not have drinking water, and every eighth kid has the risk to get ill.
Kindergarten "Romanita" from Todiresti village, Anenii Noi district is connected to the water pipeline. The water quality leaves much to be desired, as the ammonium and fluorine concentration is overboard. This is the reason children are drinking bottled water.
"Now, the institution does not have a filter which might guarantee or increase the quality of the drinking water. It is a necessity and we hope in the following period to find the necessary sources to purchase it. The institution budget does not allow the purchase of the filter" said the deputy director of the kindergarten "Romanita" from Todiresti village, Anenii Noi district, Ludmila Bebe.
The institution is visited by approximately 80 children. According to the study, over 60% of kindergartens are using water which does not correspond to sanitary norms.
"First of all it is because we have over 25% of preschool institutions, and in case of rural places, over 40% are still using water from wells. And as we know, the wells are more vulnerable sources, unprotected ones" said the deputy director of Public Health National Centre, Ion Salaru
Moreover, in 30% of institutions the water represents a high risk for health.
"Most often are registered cases of A hepatitis because of water contamination and the non-compliance of sanitary rules and cases of dysentery or cases of cryptosporidium" said the deputy director of Public Health National Centre, Ion Salaru.
The data of the study also show that over 40% of kindergartens have the toilets outdoors and do not have lavatories and water. The data were collected from all 1457 preschool institutions in the country from which are benefiting over 146,000 children
