Operations performed for the first time in our country. Several surgeons from the United States came to Chisinau to work with our specialists. Physicians have performed two cranioplasty interventions and a maxilo-facial complex.
One of the operations was done to a 12-year-old girl diagnosed with Crouzon syndrome, a condition that affects the shape of the head and face. The first surgery took her only one year in the US. Now, however, another surgery was needed to avoid complications.
The operation lasted six hours and went without any complications.
"Surgery is just a part of all the surgical rehabilitation. There is another three months of rehabilitation with special devices," said Silvia Railean, surgeon.
For a week, US doctors worked side by side with Moldovans to help 15 children have a normal life.
"We do not have such operations alone, but in a team, usually a neurosurgeon, a craniofacial surgeon, and a pediatric anesthesiologist. It was a very good experience because such operations are very complicated, "said Lisa David, surgeon.
"I think your surgeons in the country are able to perform operations that require advanced techniques, but they are sometimes limited by the resources they have, we have helped them to do really great things," said Anatolie Crihan, neurosurgeon.
Moldovan neurosurgeons say that it is a useful experience for them and that they will already be able to perform difficult tasks in our country.
"In order to gain experience in a new type of operation, we need a lot of research, many laboratories. We get this right now," said Christoper Runeney, a surgeon.
The US specialists' visit was made in a collaborative project between the North Carolina State University of Medicine and the University of Medicine and Pharmacy Nicolae Testemitanu".
