May 9. Moldova celebrates Victory Day and Europe Day
Every year, on May 9, people celebrate peace and unity all over Europe. For this occasion, in the Capital, as well as all over the country, will be organized events to mark Europe Day and Victory Day.
On the same day, everyone remembers the declarations made by French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman, who suggested the creation of a single authority to control the production of steel and coal in France and West Germany, which became the base of European Union.
With this occasion, institutions from Brussels, Luxembourg and Strasbourg will open their gates to the public. Events are organized in both EU members states, as well as the rest of the world. Traditionally, people participate in debates organized for Europe Day and gain more information regarding European Union.
Victory in Europe Day took place on Tuesday, May 8, 1945, when allied forces announced that Germany has surrendered, marking the end of the Second World War.
The day before at 2:41pm on May 7, 1945, Germany had surrendered.
On September 1, 1939, Nazi Germany invaded Poland, which broke out World War II.
On August 23, 1939 Germany and the Soviet Union sign a non-aggression pact, known as Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact.
In December 1941, Japan attacked the American Military base in Pearl Harbor, which led to the United States' entry into World War II.
This is considered the true beginning of the Second World War, which lasted six years and claimed the lives of at least 60 million people.
